I though you were one of the lads at the end of the pier Ally. This is a good en for McFlett, the drifter broadside on is BF 304 the GUIDING STAR built by McIntosh of Portessie and the one next the North pier is the SUNNYSIDE, BF167 built at Cullen by W & G Gardiner. There seems to be a lot going on in this photo, the crews look as though they have been watching the sail boat going out and some are walking back to their boats. The two drifters are fired up as though ready to go but I can\'t work out what is happening with the three sail boats in the middle of the harbour still tied together. Maybe just giving the drifters room to turn. Curious.

Wot can I say lads - talk about a photo capturing Sail & Steam!! - you\'ve got some classics ally. Your Dad should be given a medal or something for safeguarding his collection! Well spotted causea - definitely a good one for me as I\'ve never seen a shot of the GUIDING STAR before. Every chance my grandad worked on that one - 1906 would have seen him well into his apprenticeship. GUIDING STAR met her end at Lewis in 1914, and SUNNYSIDE was launched in 1910 - so the photo is sometime between then. Info I have on the zulu BF 705 - JEREMIAH, also built locally by Gardiner in 1901. Another interesting point. According to Ron Stewart \'Sail & Steam\', the original W. Gardiner boatbuilder at Cullen, served his apprenticeship with John McIntosh at Portessie in the late 1860\'s .
Purely speculation here Jonah - but I agree the zulu at sea is shortening sail ready for entering harbour. The two steam drifters have just entered harbour - as have the 3 zulus?? Who knows - historic picture!

with the way the wind looks in this photo the winds on the port shoulder of the lugger shortening sail so the winds blowing in the harbour mouth. boys on the pier will have to take turn on the lugger aft of the drifters to stop her. they`re going to berth outside the steam drifters as its easier to let her inside the row rather than manouever her outside the row after shes been checked at the pier-maybe???????
