So just why has Alex Salmond decided to renege on his promise of NO CFP in 2005 when today he leads his party's demands to remain IN the EU which , of course , means in the CFP. Wouldn't just be naked opportunist electioneering taking the fishing industry for mugs would it ??

    Fishing bill launched in Commons

Alex Salmond wants to return fisheries to national control
Nationalist leader Alex Salmond has launched a bill in the Commons, aimed at taking the UK out of Europe's Common Fisheries Policy (CFP).

The Fisheries Jurisdiction Bill calls on the Scottish Parliament to be given the power to regulate fishing.

Under his proposals, similar powers responsibilities would also pass to the Northern Ireland Assembly and the Welsh Assembly.

Mr Salmond wants Westminster to retain responsibility for English waters.

The Scottish National Party leader said: "It is time to return fisheries back to national control."

However, his move has been attacked by the Tories.

Shadow Scottish Secretary Peter Duncan said: "This is nothing more than a cheap publicity stunt by Alex Salmond. Everybody knows that there is no chance of this bill ever making it onto the statute book, let alone before the General Election.

The Cod Crusaders and other campaigners who care deeply about the future of this industry have done a tremendous job
    Sir Sean Connery

"The Common Fisheries Policy is a biological, environmental, economic and social disaster; it is beyond reform. But there is nothing the SNP can do about it, as they cannot form a UK Government."

He added: "The Conservatives are committed to withdrawal from the CFP"

Mr Salmond has been backed by the Cod Crusaders, the Fraserburgh-based group opposed to catch cuts.

Spokeswoman Carol MacDonald said: "The fishing industry crisis has affected so many livelihoods the whole length of Britain, so it's only but right that the Queen is notified of what has just been presented to her government.

"The petition reflects how many people feel outraged by what is currently happening to the industry and yet the plea for national control is repeatedly being ignored by our current Labour leadership.

    007 support

"It's about time they sat up and listened to public opinion."

Actor Sir Sean Connery also stated his support for the petition, describing the CFP as a "disaster" for Scotland's fishing communities.

"The Cod Crusaders and other campaigners who care deeply about the future of this industry have done a tremendous job standing up for their communities," said the high-profile SNP supporter.

"I would like to wish them every success in their campaign to ensure a secure future for the fishing industry and the communities who depend on it."
