My father was eighteen years old in September 1917 and he volunteered for Royal Navy Service.
He eventually became stoker on H.M. Boom Defence Vessel Cinceria at Scapa FloeWar 1914-18. H.M. Boom Defence Vessel CINCERIA crew.jpg, and was there when the German Fleet surrendered; the skeleton German crew turned out in best uniforms at attention on deck. In contrast, my photograph of Cinceria's crew shows my father, hidden behind the tough looking guy with arms folded in their best civvies.
Two of the crew members were Duncan Keith and David Malcolm, both Scotsmen with whom my father kept in touch for over fifty years. I am named Keith and my elder brother is Malcolm.
