A South Yorkshire fish and chip shop will attempt to break the world record for cooking the largest portion of cod and chips.

Scawsby Fisheries in Doncaster will serve 30lb (13.6kg) of battered cod alongside 60lb (27.2kg) of chips.

Doncaster paratrooper Ben Parkinson, who lost both legs below the knee in Afghanistan in 2006, will be the first person to sample the meal.

Money raised will go to his charity, Pilgrim Bandits.

Martin Bilby, from Scawsby Fisheries, said the current world record for the largest portion of cod and chips, totalling a weight of 77lb (34.9kg), was held by a restaurant in Boston, US.

He said the Doncaster chip shop would try to beat the current record by around 13lb (5.9kg).

The pan in which the cod will be fried has been borrowed from the Wensleydale Heifer restaurant in West Witton, North Yorkshire.

The Wensleydale Heifer broke the world record for cooking the largest portion of halibut and chips in 2011.

Scawsby Fisheries is almost 50 miles (80km) from the sea.

The cod has been sourced from Iceland.
