The man behind the world's biggest solar-powered boat has said there is a "huge potential" to use alternative energy in the industry as the ship docks in Hong Kong.

The boat has arrived in Hong Kong as part of its world tour

The 100ft by 50ft catamaran has arrived there as part of a world trip.

It has more than 500 sq metres (5,380 sq ft) of solar panelling and can reach a speed of around 15 knots, which is equivalent to 25 kilometres, or 15 miles, per hour.

Project founder Raphael Domjan said: "We see there is a huge potential for solar boats.

"We have the technology to change and we are optimistic."

Merchant shipping accounts for 4.5% of the world's total greenhouse gas emissions, according to figures from the United Nations.

The boat, which can carry up to 50 passengers, travelled from the Philippines to Hong Kong.

It began the world tour in Monaco last September.
