    Default UNIMAT Lathe

Has anyone had any experience with the Unimat lathe?
I am thinking of buying one which I would be using to turn mainly plastics at slow speed. Would it be suitable?
    Any info would be appreciated

Bill if you head over to the following site : http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php

There are a great many modeller's who have used Lathe's and can help ( including Kayem - Kingstone mouldings , PSShips - Sirmar , etc )

Bill, I bought a second hand Unimat SL metalworking lathe many years ago and for model work it's served me well. I bought it around 1985 and its still going strong. I did most of the turning for the construction of a stuart turner 10V model steam engine and the only piece it wasn't capable of turning was the flywheel. I find it excellent for turning brass or plastic although larger diameter brass work takes more time due to smaller cuts. I'm sure the newer models would be more powerful so I'd have no reservations about buying one. I see your post is from July last year so realise you may already have taken the plunge.

You are right, I have a Unimat 3 and a Chinese lathe which I bought to replace it. I still use the Unimat for smaller pieces but the bearings are a little noisy.
If you want to scratch build buy one.

Hi, I am going to give you my opinion about the Unimat lathes. They are all good, except unimat1 which is a beautiful muck, too much expensive for its performances.

    Good evening!
