Fishing leaders on Scotland's west coast are to meet the UK's immigration minister to discuss crew shortages.

Some skippers say they struggle to find locals to work on their boats and so recruit fishermen from the Philippines.

However, the skippers say these workers have recently been encountering difficulties obtaining work visas.

A delegation of fishing leaders will meet UK Immigration Minister Robert Goodwill in Westminster later on Tuesday.

The meeting follows on from earlier discussions between Mr Goodwill and Western Isles MP Angus MacNeil, Argyll and Bute MP Brendan O'Hara and South Down MP Margaret Ritchie.

At the earlier meeting, the minister agreed to meet with fishing industry leaders before the end of the year.

Mr MacNeil said: "I am pleased that the Immigration Minister Robert Goodwill has kept to his word and will meet with fishing industry leaders.

"The west coast is in need of fishing crews and the UK government rather than blocking the economy must help it in line with the wishes of Scotland, the islands and fishing communities."
