Icelandic fisheries company HB Grandi has declared that, like last year, none of its processing plants will close for the summer months.

In most cases, students will take over from the regular staff who are taking holidays and around a hundred youngsters are expected to be working for the company over the season.

According to Bergur Einarsson, in charge of production at the Nordurgardur production plant in Reykjavík, 45 youngsters have been taken on, along with 20 at the factory in Akranes. This is a smaller number than last year, because of the smaller volumes of fish to be processed over the summer than in previous years.

‘We also introduced short courses for the temporary summer staff to go over the main subjects that fish workers need to be aware of. These include an introduction to handling raw material, quality issues, hygiene and health and safety in the workplace. These are three four-hour courses that we are running right now,’ Bergur Einarsson said.

There has been a break in production at the Vopnafjördur factory since the end of the capelin season and production at the fishmeal factory stopped at the end of the blue whiting season. Production will re-start in July when fishing is underway on mackerel and Atlanto-Scandian herring.

According to factory manager Magnús Róbertsson, there will be a staff of 70 to 80 people working at the factory this summer, of which a number will be students.
