Milford Fish Docks, the largest fishing port in Wales, has been experiencing record fish landings, having had the highest tonnages landed for more than 10 years during 2012 and the highest in fifteen years during January 2013.

These positive figures (within quota allowances) were a talking point at a recent meeting of members from the British Ports Association who were given a deeper insight into the future of Milford Haven’s fishing industry during their bi-annual BPA Fishing Ports Working Group meeting.

Representatives from eighteen UK fishing ports including Brixham, Plymouth, Peterhead, Newlyn, Grimsby and Holyhead visited Milford Haven at the start of May. The group sampled local fish and were given an overview of Milford Fish Docks’ proposed developments by the Port of Milford Haven’s Short Sea Director Kevin Hobbs. The following day the group visited Castlemartin Firing Range where they were shown how the range engages with their fishing stakeholders. This was followed by a full meeting in which industry issues were discussed and updates were received on current policies and funding streams from representatives of SEAFISH, Welsh Government and the Marine Management Organisation.

Kevin Hobbs, Short Sea Director at the Port of Milford Haven, was pleased to be host the BPA Fishing Ports Working Group. He said “The meeting provided a great opportunity for us to showcase Milford Fish Docks and the wider Port of Milford Haven to our colleagues in the industry. We were delighted to host them here in Pembrokeshire and share with them our plans to build on Milford’s fishing history by investing in new infrastructure, services and facilities.”

The Port of Milford Haven’s Milford Dock Master Plan, which encompasses an investment programme costing in excess of £60 million, is set to regenerate the Dock Basin in Milford Haven and, attract further business related to the fishing sector.

Chairman of the BPA Fishing Ports Working Group and Chief Executive of Grimsby Fish Market Martyn Boyers found the visit of great value. He said: “The meeting and visit to Milford Haven was extremely worthwhile with a good mix of attendees. Their knowledge at the meeting coupled with the itinerary provided by the Port gave a great insight into marine operations and the challenges ports face. Particularly interesting was the visit to Castlemartin, which apart from being a unique set up, also highlighted the complexity of managing the Port and sea areas for everyone’s benefit. All the port representatives were impressed by the progress and professionalism of Milford Fish Docks.”
