THE 21st European Association of Fisheries Economists (EAFE) conference is taking place at Heriot-Watt University, outside Edinburgh, on 15-17 April.

Over 80 delegates are travelling from as far afield as Japan and Alaska to enjoy a packed schedule of presentations, special sessions and events at the biennial conference, which is being hosted in Scotland for the first time.

Hazel Curtis, Chief Economist at Seafish and President of EAFE, said: "We were delighted to take on the challenge of organising the EAFE conference for 2013. The event presents an invaluable opportunity to discuss key issues for fisheries economists and researchers and gives an ideal platform for the exchange of knowledge and expertise.

"We have also arranged a varied and busy schedule for delegates outside of the core conference agenda each day. Social events include a tour of the Highlands and an industry visit to Fife, which we hope will show the challenges facing the fishing industry in Scotland giving delegates a fascinating insight, and allow them to sample some first class Scottish fish and chips.

"The official reception on Monday evening (15 April), sponsored by Marine Scotland, will feature an opening address by Mike Park of the Scottish White Fish Producers Association. Poster presentations will also take place throughout the evening."

The conference theme is 'Securing the future Implementing reform in European Fisheries'. Keynote speakers at this event are: Richard Lochhead MSP; Professor Thomas Sterner, Visiting Chief Economist at Environmental Defense Fund; Lowri Evans, Director-General of DG Mare, European Commission; and Professor Ragnar Tvetaras, University of Stavanger.

A variety of key topics and issues are on the agenda for discussion at the conference, including the cultural and social values of fisheries, data collection and analysis in fisheries management, and economic implications of the reform of the Common Fisheries Policy.

At the conference dinner, prizes sponsored by Heriot-Watt University will be presented for the 'Best Policy Paper' and the 'Best Student paper'. The dinner will be held at the Heights Restaurant, Apex Hotel in the Grassmarket, which boasts stunning views of Edinburgh Castle.
