Fire caused sinking of trawler

Written by Shefali Soni on 12 March 2013.

The "SAR Gavia" was expected at Ferrol on Mar 11 at 9 p.m. with one crew member of the "Rebecca Elizabeth" on board. Another man was taken to Hospital da Costa in Burela (Lugo) with symptoms of hypothermia. On Mar 10 there was a small fire aboard the trawler that damaged several computers and also caused a leak, but the ship, with four crew on board, still had propulsion. Two of the four crew members were evacuated on Mar 10 by helicopter, the other two decided to remain on board waiting to be taken in tow by Salvamento Marítimo. On scene was west wind of 8 bf with a speed of 35 knots. At midnight, the "SAR Gavia" reached the "Rebecca Elisabeth" 90 miles north of La Coruna and started to tow. However, the trawler finally sank on Mar 11 around 11 a.m. abot 65 miles north of Estaca de Bares. Spanish reports with photo: www.europapress.e... www.salvamentomar...
