"Fair Trade premiums paid to producers have enabled them to enjoy higher and more stable incomes, especially when global prices were low," he suggested.

The remarks came as Humza Yousaf, the Minister for External Relations and International Development, formally announced that Scotland had met the criteria.

Mr Rhodes added: "Fair Trade Nation status is a celebration of what has been achieved and a platform to campaign for further change in global trade.

"It marks the success of the partnership between producers in the developing world and consumers and campaigners here in Scotland.

"While we have much to celebrate today, work must continue to keep the positive momentum to further embed Fair Trade values across all sectors of society."

By February, 62 Scottish towns had either achieved Fairtrade status or had active steering groups.

Almost two-thirds of higher education institutions and 171 schools had also achieved the standard.
