Fifty jobs are to go at a major Aberdeenshire fish processing firm, it has been announced.

Peterhead-based Fresh Catch told BBC Scotland it had been badly hit by a 95% cut in the blue whiting quota this year.

It is understood the job losses amount to about a quarter of the firm's workforce.

Fresh Catch was founded in 1989 in Peterhead. The company has offices in England, Denmark and Poland.

Managing director Christopher Anderson said the quota cuts were "criminal" and had left Fresh Catch with no alternative but to cut jobs.

The firm's quayside headquarters are off Peterhead's Kirk Street.
