Hi everyone

I would like to scale up a plan of a scottish fifie,it was free June model boats,Its 1:20 if i enlarge it by half again what scale would that become...hope someone can help..Denis:

Tried to puzzle this out. If you mean enlarging the plan till ten inches on its scale measures fifteen on the copy, I think that gives you a wierd scale of 13.3 to 1. On the other hand, if you're setting the photocopier to 1.5 times the original area, I think that works out at 16.3 to 1, The unfortunate truth is that I have not a skooby. My head hurts now.

Maybe the easiest way is to ask your local photocopying business to enlarge it to the scale you want it to be.

Good luck finding a mathematician.

Rob is quite correct , in his calcs.

As the plan is for a 38'-0"" long vessel, at 1-20 , the model should be 1.9 ft long , if you want it half as big again , the length would then be 1.9 x 1.5 = 2.85 ft. if you divide 38'-0" by 2.85' the answer is 13.3333 recurring.

You need to enlarge your plan by 150%

As most photocopiers only go up to either 121% or 141% . the calculation has to be done to get your scale to 150% you have to calculate the difference, as an intermediate scale or secondary enlargement.

For photocopier with 121% maximum enlargement

The first stage --- Enlarge the plan to 121% as your max enlargement, the 1-20 length of 1.9ft x1.21 = 2.299ft, then divide your required length of 2.85 ft by 2.299ft which equals 1.239 (use 1.24)

then set the photocopier to 124% and enlarge the plan again.

this will give you the overall length of 2.299 x 1.24 = 2.85076 ft.

For photocopier with 141% maximum enlargement

The first stage --- Enlarge the plan to 141% as your max enlargement,the 1-20 length of 1.9ft x1.41 = 2.679ft, then divide your required length of 2.85 ft by 2.679ft which equals 1.0638 (use 1.07)

then set the photocopier to 107% and enlarge the plan again.

this will give you the overall length of 2.679 x 1.07 = 2.8566 ft.

you could use 106% giving an overall length of 2.839ft. (2.84 ft) which is marginally smaller.
